2022 Jazz Music Events in Melbourne
1. Thando: The Jill Scott Project at The Toff in Town
Speaking of Thando, she is the first of our festival must-see activities. Thando, a Melbourne-based singer-songwriter born in Zimbabwe, has been captivating audiences throughout Australia with her electrifying stage presence and powerful voice.
She is a dominating performer with an innate ability to weave a story and transport her audience on a reflective journey. The singer-songwriter grew up listening to Ladysmith Black Mambazo, QUEEN, and TLC. Along the way, she met Jill Scott and used an electric live performance to build her genre-defying style. Hopefully, you will get the chance to see her rocking performance this year too.
2. Jazz Westside at the Footscray Night Market
The festival brings jazz to the west with a free night of music at the newly opened Footscray Night Market for Jazz Westside, which will feature a performance by Gordon Koang, a popular figure in South Sudan and an exceptional musician with nine albums to his credit. Gordon preaches a message of peace, love, and harmony via dance, accompanied by his cousin Paul Biel and his new Australian band. Gordon’s album Unity was published in 2020 on the Music In Exile imprint of Bedroom Suck, earning him a nomination for the 2020 Australian Music Prize. Attend this famous jazz event in Melbourne without a failure.
3. The Experience @ The Toff in Town
The Experience at the Troff pays respect to the late “Bra Hugh” Masekela, South Africa’s father of jazz, and Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, Zimbabwe’s music legend.
Bra Hugh and Tuku, with almost a century of music and hundreds of recordings between them, were instrumental in the liberation of South Africa and Zimbabwe and paved the way for youthful musicians across the continent. Led by ZIIMUSIC and featuring members of The Experience and Zimbabwean-born vocalist Thando, these outstanding musicians pay homage to these renowned artists’ legacies.
