BURROWS AT
JAZZ IN THE PINES
Norfolk's whispering pines will echo to the brassy tones of Living
National Treasure Don Burrows when the island's eighth annual
Jazz in The Pines Festival takes place December 7-11 this year.
Set amongst spectacular island scenery, the fingers-snapping,
feel-good week of swing, funk and blues will also see Melbourne
group the Syncopators deliver the class that won them this year's
classic jazz award at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
Also performing will be former Norfolk Islander Rick Robertson
and the Eon Beats with sassy vocalist Evelyn Duprai and the Kevin
Hunt Trio with crooner Johnny Nicol, giving the line-up the pick
of Australia's East Coast jazz and blues talent. An added bonus
will see a "Stop, Look and Listen" exhibition of photographs
taken by the multi-talented Mr Burrows AO, MBE over a lifetime
of travel and jazz playing.
"Jazz fans have been coming to Norfolk Island for the past
seven years to enjoy this world-class music festival, and they
could not be picking a better time to be here with an outstanding
festival line-up and great holiday deals on offer," said
Norfolk Island Tourism General Manager Terry Watson. "Our
famous pine trees and Kingston's Georgian architecture provide
a wonderful setting for musical events, and jazz lovers can look
forward to mixing world-standard entertainment with a range of
fun activities on our small slice of Pacific paradise."

WEST END COMPOSERS & TRIO APOPLECTIC NATIONAL TOUR
This July, experience two of Australia's leading contemporary
jazz ensembles as they embark on national tours proudly supported
by Sound Travellers.
West End Composers Collective began in 2003 as a monthly gathering
of Brisbane's creative improvising musicians, composers and arrangers
to workshop original compositions. Since then, this ten piece
ensemble has formed into one of the most exciting representations
of Brisbane's finest jazz musicians presenting rich and harmonic
contemporary Australian jazz. Since their inception, the Collective
have performed at a multitude of iconic venues and jazz festivals.
Saxophonist Rafael Karlen's title track from their recent release
Driving Hat was a finalist in the 2009 Bell Awards for the Best
Australian Jazz Song of the year.
Don't miss the chance to experience the sound of this incredible
ensemble up close. Brisbane (July 9 - Jazzworx), Cairns (July
10 - Tanks Arts Centre), Sydney (July 11 - SIMA), Melbourne (July
12 - Bennett's Lane), Adelaide (July 14 - The Promethean), Canberra
(July 15 - Folkus), Brisbane (18 July - Brisbane Jazz Club).
Following the release of their second album, Trio Apoplectic are
proving they are a force to be reckoned with on the Australian
jazz scene. Featuring Alex Masso (drums), Abel Cross (bass) and
Dave Jackson (saxophone), the trio met in 2003 while studying
at The Sydney Conservatorium with numerous tours and two critically
acclaimed albums to follow ("Trio Apoplectic" - JazzGroove
2007 and "Sofia" - Rufus Records 2009). Intuitively
the trio can swing lightly, blithely but with a mounting intensity
that can create fields of beauty. Dave Jackson's saxophone can
embrace you, haunt you or rock you to your core. Trio Apoplectic
play pure melodies with interactive improvisation, evoking the
effortless lyricism of West Coast cool school and the freedom
of post-Ornette Coleman jazz. Their fans include International
Festival Directors, music critics and audiences alike. Start now
with these brilliant musicians and see where it takes you. Canberra
(15 July - Hippo Bar), Melbourne (19 July - Bennett's Lane), Adelaide
(20 July - The Wheatsheaf), Perth (22 July - Ellington Jazz Club),
Darwin (24 July - Browns Mart), Sydney (28 July - Jazzgroove).
Now in its second year, Sound Travellers supports the promotion
and national touring of sound art/electronica, improvised jazz
and contemporary classical music. Initiated by the Australia Council
Music Board, Sound Travellers is produced in association with
Performing Lines and Ceres Solutions. The third grant round for
Sound Travellers is open now. For venue details and more information
