LADIES IN JAZZ

If ever the Adelaide music/jazz scene needed an injection of sparkle, it's surely by featuring more Ladies in Jazz and that's exactly what will occur on Wednesday, October 6th, when The Promethean 116 Grote Street will be the place to be for A Tribute to the Ladies in Jazz.
Promoted by The South Australian Jazz Archive Inc. with a funding injection from the late, lamented Jazz Action Society Inc., this will be a concert about some of the internationally renowned ladies in jazz, played and sung by some of Adelaide's own talented ladies in jazz. From the local scene are the vocalists Sophie Zerner and Lauren Sturdy, with a band led by drummer Holly Thomas, including Georgie Aué on piano, Alana Dawes on bass and Natalie Ahrens on baritone saxophone. What a line-up! They'll be paying tribute to a bunch of the great jazz singers, including Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Certainly a sparkling night of jazz entertainment.
Don't be sorry you missed it! Book now by 'phoning 8374 3444 and then claim your seat by arriving at The Prom when doors open at 7.30 pm. The concert commences at 8.00.

MISINTERPROTATO
"THE GENTLE WAR" NATIONAL TOUR

Stunning contemporary music trio Misinterprotato will be at The Promethean, 116 Grote Street, Adelaide, on Sunday October 18, from 7.30pm, to launch their eagerly anticipated 4th album "The Gentle War". Recorded in the serene surrounds of Tallebudgera and then mixed in Minneapolis by Brent Sigmeth the resulting album is a bold step forward for the group, cementing their place as an ensemble with a truly individual approach to music making, simultaneously thunderous and hushed, and remarkably compelling.
The Brisbane trio, comprising Sean Foran piano, John Parker drums and Pat Marchisella acoustic bass, are no strangers to Brisbane audiences but 2010 see's the group really begin to take off. Already they've completed a tour of the UK, collaborative projects with classical group Topology and dance company Expressions and will tour this new album around Australia before heading to South America in September for performances.
Their latest release "The Gentle War" features their distinctive mix of dense rhythmic interactions and gentle melodic statements. The shape-shifting grooves of Tailgater and Cute are relentless while the meditative Blues for the Space and Interlude bring out some truly beautiful melodic statements. The resulting album is finely focused, intimate, and always daring.
They tour the album with support from the Sound Travellers program with performances in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Townsville, Wollongong, and the Gold Coast.
"...an absorbing performance from a band with an intriguingly original approach to music-making". - The Vortex London Live Review
"...part of the new wave of piano trios, citing influences such as EST, The Necks and Radiohead. Emphasizing an ensemble approach, they are more than comfortable cranking up the volume, generating mesmeric and fluid runs, working in tight with each other". - Live Review, Wangaratta Jazz Festival - The Age

THE BLACK JESUS EXPERIENCE

Described as the father of 'Ethio-jazz', one of Ethiopia's most influential and legendary musicians, Mulatu Astatke comes to Adelaide for the first time, performing for one night only on Thursday 21 October with Melbourne and Ethiopian ensemble The Black Jesus Experience.
Recreating the show that received rave reviews at the 2010 Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Astatke and The Black Jesus Experience will present an evening of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and some intense vibraphone playing, in the relaxed setting of Adelaide Festival Centre's Piano Bar.
Astatke is an innovative musician, composer, arranger and the founder of 'Ethio Jazz' - the infectious music dating back to the 1960s that combines Latin jazz and early soul and funk with traditional Ethiopian harmony. Born in 1943, Astatke became the first Ethiopian musician to study abroad in London and the United States where he became immersed in jazz music. Returning home, he began experimenting with traditional Ethiopian melodies and rhythms, infusing them with jazz; a new musical style was born.
From the late 1960s and 1970s and through to today, Astatke's global mark on music has been phenomenal. While having never ceased working in his hometown of Addis Ababa, the worldwide public appreciation of his music has been deservedly renewed with many re-issues of his early recordings through the Ethiopiques label, making his back catalogue releases collectors' items the world over.
Astatke joins with The Black Jesus Experience, a dynamic Australian/Ethiopian ensemble that fuses traditional Ethiopian song with jazz, funk and hip hop. Last seen in Adelaide at WOMADelaide 2009, this 10 piece ensemble has supported Afrobeat legend Tony Allen and has recently returned from a highly successful tour of Europe and Ethiopia.
It's now Adelaide's chance to soak up the intoxicating sounds of The Black Jesus Experience with special guest Mulatu Astatke, and move to the grooves of these incredible musicians.
"Ethio-Jazz as played by these talented musicians makes it impossible to stay still." Australian Stage.
Adult $45, Concession $40, Student $30, Green Room $19.95, Group (6+) $35. Bookings at BASS on 131 246 or online at www.bass.net.au
